Dining room furniture that was purchased by John Duffy of Michigan’s Cheboygan River Front Range Lighthouse when he was the keeper there from 1899 to 1931 has been returned to the lighthouse.
The furniture, which includes a buffet, hutch, dining table and chairs, was purchased in Detroit, Michigan and shipped by train by keeper Duffy shortly after he arrived in Cheboygan in 1899. The pieces remained at the lighthouse until he retired in 1931, when he took them with him. The furniture was donated and brought back to the lighthouse by descendant family members and is now sitting in the same place it sat more than 100 years ago.
The lighthouse is now open to the public seasonally as a museum with a gift shop and offers overnight accommodations to volunteers who give tours and operate the gift shop.
