Under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act, the federal government has deemed Rhode Island’s 1856 Beavertail Lighthouse Station as surplus property. This means that any legitimate nonprofit or other government entity can apply for ownership free of charge.
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, through a partnership with the town of Jamestown and the Beavertail Lighthouse Museum, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that has outlined an agreement that would apply for ownership of the lighthouse. The agreement would make the lighthouse a state-owned property, supported by the town of Jamestown and managed and operated by the museum. The lighthouse station currently sits on property that is surrounded by the Beavertail State Park.
This means that unless some nonprofit submits a better qualified application, which is highly unlikely, ownership of the lighthouse will be transferred from the federal government to the State of Rhode Island.
