Horseshoe Reef Light Is On its Last Two Legs – Literally

The doomed 1856 Horseshoe Reef Lighthouse, at the junction of Lake Erie and the Niagara River in Buffalo, New York, is now on its last two legs – literally.

Most of the foundation that the lighthouse sits upon has crumbled away, leaving only two of the four iron support legs precariously bracing up what is left of the lighthouse that was officially abandoned on August 1, 1919.

Perhaps when the structure does collapse into the water, someone with a little money can hire a barge and a crane to remove and save the lantern. But that is most likely a pipe dream. Soon, the lighthouse will be gone and lost forever.
