We recently discovered this unique rare photograph of Maine's Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse.
On the back of the photograph is written, "These three and GMC truck delivered 13 gross tons of coal to the lighthouse in one day and this being the only time it has been done. The men by the truck from right to left are A.C. McIntosh, Lute Day (or Days), Bert Herrick driver of the truck. The other two are Government men." It was signed by A.C. McIntosh and dated August 8, 1918.
On the truck we were able to make out the words, COAL, WOOD, HAY on the top line and SPEAR in the middle. We were unable to determine what the third line of lettering on the truck said.
This is considered an extremely rare artifact and a vital part of the history of Maine's Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse.
We have had the photograph enlarged into poster size, framed and donated it to The Friends of the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse. They eventually will have it on display at the lighthouse when it is restored and opened to the public.
