Rear Admiral Meredith L. Austin, U.S. Coast Guard, is shown here accepting a collection of Japanese lighthouse postage stamps from Rear Adm. Tsuguo Awai of the Japanese Coast Guard at a recent ceremony in Washington, D.C.
The new postage stamps were recently issued by Japan in honor of the 150th anniversary of three of its lighthouses. The stamps include an image of Japan’s first lighthouse, Kannonzaki, which marks the western entrance to Tokyo Bay. Other lighthouses featured are Hesaki Lighthouse at the northern tip of Fukuoka Prefecture; Murotosaki Lighthouse (a/k/a Cape Muroto Lighthouse) on Muroto Cape on Shuoku Island; and Mikomotoshima Lighthouse, on an islet almost six nautical miles south from the Port of Shimoda.
In turn, as a thank you, Rear Admiral Austin presented the Japanese Rear Admiral with a U.S. Lighthouse Service coffee mug from the organization that became part of the U.S. Coast Guard in 1939.
