A new one dollar Australian coin, struck by the Perth Mint, honors the bicentenary of the construction of the Macquarie Lighthouse, Australia’s first lighthouse.
Except for the rings and the “200,” the new coin is pretty much like the original proposal that noted lighthouse photographer and historian John Ibbotson initially submitted to the mint.
No more than 3,000 of the coins, which are legal tender in Australia, are being made by the mint. The coins are one ounce of 99.99% pure silver and are issued in proof quality, and will arrive gift-boxed and in a presentation case. The coin’s obverse depicts an image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth of England.
