Lens Protection: Curtains or covers?

We often get asked why some lighthouses used curtains or shades and others used a lens cover, to protect the lens and brass from the harmful rays of the sun.

The answer is – we really don’t know. But a good guess is that a lens cover was much easier and in the long run, cheaper to maintain than curtains.
