Stories and photos abound about the lightships, lighthouse tenders, and others various vessels that were operated and used by the United States Lighthouse Service (USLHS). But one vessel that has been largely ignored is the derrick scow USLHS No. 1 that traversed the waters of the Great Lakes as a work horse that was used in a number of construction projects.

The men who operated the derrick scow had just as much talent and dedication to duty as did the captains and crews of the lightships and lighthouse tenders.

However, no one ever thought to save the derrick scow USLHS No. 1 as an artifact of the engineering feats that were accomplished in the building of many lighthouses on the Great Lakes.

As part of our ongoing effort to educate others while preserving all aspects of lighthouse history, we are publishing a few photos of USLHS No. 1 while it was on assignment at a number of construction projects on the Great Lakes in the early 1900s.
