Hurricane Irma that caused catastrophic damage to Florida this past September was the culprit that caused major beach erosion at the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse. So much sand was washed away that the lighthouse was in danger of toppling over. Over 50% of the land that the lighthouse stands on has been lost.
To fix this problem, a 50-foot wall of Georgia Granite is needed to create a retaining wall to replace the damaged concrete wall that was erected in 2004. It is stated that the new wall will not only last for generations, but will protect the lighthouse from falling down.
To help pay for this major expense, a Go Fund Me account has been launched for donations that can be made on-line at: www.gofundme.com/save-the-hillsboro-inlet-lighthouse.
