Thanks to the efforts of the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife the 1853 Port Isabel Lighthouse in Port Isabel, Texas recently underwent renovations to the lantern of the historic structure. The tower was closed to the public during the recent project but was scheduled to reopen by the time this issue went in the mail.
The Port Isabel Lighthouse is the only lighthouse in Texas that is open to the public on a regular basis. In 1995 a replica of the former keeper’s house was constructed at the site that now houses interpretative displays. (Photo courtesy Valerie Bates, City of Port Isabel.)
