In the on-going great lighthouse givewaway, the U.S. Coast Guard, through the General Services Administration, is offering another batch of lighthouses free of charge to qualified nonprofits or other government entities. All of the lighthouses have been declared excess property by the Coast Guard and are offered under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act. If no qualified entity steps forward to apply for ownership, the lighthouses will then be auctioned off to the highest bidder.
The lighthouses being given up for adoption are the Detroit River Lighthouse, Minneapolis Shoal Lighthouse, North Manitou Shoal Lighthouse, Port Washington Breakwater Lighthouse, Greens Ledge Lighthouse, and Southwest Ledge Lighthouse.
