This past February 20th, for the sum of one dollar, the federal government transferred the ownership of the endangered Gay Head Lighthouse on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts to the Town of Aquinnah.
The transfer was the result of a complex memorandum of agreement between the town, the General Services Administration, the National Park Service, the Massachusetts Historical Commission, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Wampanoag Tribe of Aquinnah.
The Save the Gay Head Light Committee has raised $2.5 million toward its goal of $3 million to move the lighthouse 135 feet southeast of its current location. The 1856 tower, now standing less than 50 feet from the eroding bluff, is on the Lighthouse Digest Doomsday List of Endangered Lighthouses.
Preliminary work on the move has already started, with the actual move scheduled to take place in May.
