The General Services Administration has announced that it has transferred the ownership of the old Port Washington Lighthouse to the City of Port Washington in Wisconsin for use as an historic monument and public museum.
Located on a hill overlooking Lake Michigan in the downtown business district, the lighthouse was used until 1934 when a new breakwater light was built. At that time, the government removed the lantern room from the house.
The Port Washington Historical Society has leased the house since 1993 from the Coast Guard and will continue to operate it as a museum under a new lease from the city.
