One cannot adequately describe the difficult task of moving the base of Mississippi’s Round Island Lighthouse as the first part of the miracle in saving the historic lighthouse that was toppled in 1998 by Hurricane Georges.
The 1859 tower that once stood in Pascagoula Harbor will be rebuilt using as much of the original lighthouse as possible at a new location where it will anchor a public walking trail as a welcoming landmark to the City of Pascagoula.
Unlike some communities in the United States, such as Fairport, Ohio and Manitowoc, Wisconsin that have declined to take ownership of their community’s lighthouse that they could have obtained for free, the people of Pascagoula want their lighthouse. Plus they have the tenacity to have it moved and rebuilt, thereby honoring the legacy of those who came before us. They are to be congratulated. (Photograph courtesy of Laurie B.
