The Scituate Historical Society in Scituate, Massachusetts now has an exact replica of their historic lighthouse thanks to the efforts of expert model builder Donald Perkins.
Perkins is no stranger to hand crafting lighthouse models; this is the 39th lighthouse replica he has built. For the past 16 years he has been making lighthouse models that are now on display in six states, including one of the Middle Island Lighthouse that is on display in Alpena, Michigan, home of the annual Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival, many miles from his home in Pocasset, Massachusetts. The largest replica he ever made was of Clarke’s Point Lighthouse and the fort the lighthouse sits atop, which now on display in New Bedford, Massachusetts. A replica of Little River Lighthouse was given to the Village of Cutler, Maine when the lighthouse was relit as a Beacon of Freedom to the World. Some of his replicas are also on display at the Maine Lighthouse Museum in Rockland, Maine.
The replica of Scituate Lighthouse is 6 feet long and 19 inches wide and took nearly six months to complete. The structure has over 4,000 shingles, all meticulously put in place by hand. Members of the Scituate Historical Society were on hand to accept the donation, which will now be on display at the historic Little Red Schoolhouse in Scituate, Massachusetts.
