This special cached commemorative envelope was issued last year to honor the centenary of Kadalur Point Lighthouse, which is located on the southwest coast of India on the Arabian Sea.
Although the lighthouse, built by Trinity House, was completed in 1908, the lens did not arrive until 1909 and the Chance Brothers 2nd order Dioptric revolving lens was installed with a white flashing light that could be seen for 20 miles. (Trinity House is the General Lighthouse Authority of England, Wales and the British Territories except Scotland, Isle of Man and Northern Ireland.)
The lighthouse was originally named the Cotta Point Lighthouse and was left unpainted with its natural cement plaster finish. In the 1960s its name was changed to Kadalur Point Lighthouse and it was pained with black and white bands.
Collecting lighthouse envelopes can be an interesting and educational hobby. Some are easy to find and inexpensive, while others may require some searching. They can often be found at stamp shows. Submitted to Lighthouse Digest by I C R Prasad.
