World War II was still going on in July 1944 when Coronet magazine published a photo essay, by photojournalist Sidney Ravitz, of Coast Guard duties in the Third Naval District, which had been previously known as the Third Lighthouse District. During World War II the Coast Guard operated under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Navy.

Perhaps because of concerned security during the war, the names of the Coast Guard crews in the photographs was not included in the captions. This unfortunate omission has left a void in history, but perhaps there are those still out there who were part of these crews or can identify some of the people. Whatever the case, a photograph is worth a thousand words and we are honored to share this glimpse into the past with the readers of Lighthouse Digest.
