That’s what the headline said for this photograph taken March 11, 1926 by Pacific and Atlantic Photos.

The caption says “This one billion candle power light, is an aviation beacon, installed on Mt. Afrique near Dijon, France and is visible for 300 miles. It can be seen from the British Coast, Brussels, Frankfort and Milan and aides night travel of the air lines that are weaving a network of air routes over France.”

You may recall that in a past issue of Lighthouse Digest Cheryl Shelton-Roberts wrote about the Airways division of the United States Lighthouse Service. This must have been what was the beginning of something similar in France.

Perhaps one of our readers can supply us with more information and tell us if this tower is still standing today.
