A portion of a nearby trail caught fire on March 12, 2024, forcing the evacuation of the historic Split Rock Lighthouse on Minnesota’s North Shore. Flames and smoke from the one-acre fire could be seen approaching the lighthouse, with multiple fire departments responding to battle the blaze in the afternoon hours. All guests at the lighthouse were evacuated and the site was shut down around 2:30 p.m. The fire was put out by 4:30 p.m., according to officials. No damages were immediately reported on any historic buildings or structures. Split Rock Lighthouse was reopened to the public the following day.
