Tybee Island Lighthouse on fire in 1861 as it was depicted from an old wood-cut engraving. Fleeing Confederate troops in America's Civil War, set fire to the wooden stairs inside the lighthouse hoping to render the lighthouse useless to the Union. Union forces repaired the stairs and used the lighthouse as an observation post for the Union's attack on rebel forces at nearby Fort Pulaski. Back to the edition of: April 1999
