The first Hog Island Lighthouse, VA in its prime. It was first lit in 1853 and served until 1896 when it was replaced by a newer erector-set style lighthouse. The old lighthouse stood until 1938. By that time the part of the island that it had stood on had disappeared from erosion and the lighthouse was surrounded by water. It was destroyed in the 1938 hurricane.
