Although this image is not in the best condition, it shows Capt. George Braithwaite in his U.S. Lighthouse Service uniform in a photo taken before the Nantucket Lightship LV 117 was sunk. Braithwaite was born in England on May 2, 1866, and he grew up in Newfoundland. During the Great War he joined the U.S. Navy and served as a Lt. Commander on ships off the coast of France. He died on November 25, 1936 and was buried in the soldiers and sailors section of the Cambridge Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
