North Head Lighthouse as it appeared when the smaller 4th order Fresnel lens was in the tower. On June 6, 1942 after a Japanese submarine fired on Fort Stevens, the light was extinguished for a brief time during the duration of the war. Sometime in the 1950s, the 4th order lens was removed from the tower and replaced with two revolving aerobeacons. In the late 1990s the areobeacons were removed from the tower and replaced with a modern optic. The 4th order Fresnel lens is now on display at the Columbia River Maritime Museum.
