Shortly after a tower with a lantern and lens were installed in 1912 atop the Steele Ledge Monument, it became commonly known as the Belfast Beacon. When the harbor froze over, people were able to walk out to the site and view the new beacon for the first time. This was just another typical winter in Maine. Nowadays, the Weather Bureau would call this a Winter Vortex. Back to the edition of: Mar/Apr 2014
