The federal government has been trying to get rid of the 1874 Penfield Reef Lighthouse near Fairfield, Connecticut since 1969, when they wanted to tear it down and replace it with a nondescript, pipe-looking structure. In 2007, the lighthouse was offered up for adoption and awarded to a new owner; however, for legal reasons, the deal never went through. In 2011, the lighthouse was offered at auction, but the top bidder declined to close the deal.
In 2014, the Coast Guard spent close to $1 million to make repairs to the lighthouse, which had been heavily damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. In 2016, the Penfield Lighthouse was again put up for auction and sold, for a high bid of over $280,000, with plans to turn the lighthouse into a columbarium. But, again the deal to close on the lighthouse fell through. Then, in 2021, the lighthouse was again sold at auction, this time for $360,000. But apparently, that deal also never closed because the government has again listed the Penfield Lighthouse for sale at auction this year. (Photo by Allan Wood Photography)
