Anders Gjertsen was the assistant for the entire 19 years Rasmus was the keeper at Willapa Bay Lighthouse. Anders had come one year before as an assistant to Marinus Stream, and became head keeper, after Rasmus died in 1913, for another six years. He had started his lighthouse service in 1888 as a carpenter aboard the tender Manzanita, but due to an accident where his leg was crushed with a buoy in 1890, he was landbound from that point onward. He married at age 60 to Annie Huson and died in 1923 at the age of 68. He is buried in the Fernhill Cemetery in Menlo, Washington. (Courtesy United States Lighthouse Society)
