Because the Ludington lighthouse dwelling was across the channel from the school, the keepers had the daily task of rowing any of their school-age children over and back. Bernice Samuelson is on the far left of this c.1916 photo showing her father, keeper Fred A. Samuelson, working with the boat. It must have been a burden to the families, especially in the winter months, before the dwelling was finally moved across the channel after 1924.
