Assistant keeper Thomas S. Carroll perished in icy waters during January of 1886 as he was returning to Race Rocks Light, located near the entrance of Long Island Sound in New York. The station boat was found overturned some time later. Carroll was 53 years old and left behind his wife, Esther, and six children. (Lighthouse Digest archives, courtesy of James M.
