This picture from the lantern of the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse is from 1907 when the tower opened. The amount of growth had greatly increased by this time, but this picture best shows the area where keepers Knight and Isler worked. In just an afternoon, they cut down trees and cleared vegetation from one side of the land to the other. Then the duo cleared the cuttings far enough away to also prevent the extreme heat and ashes from igniting the dry fuel on the southern border. Once this was accomplished, the two men went to the northern border of their clearing, lighting controlled fires to remove further fuel. By the time the fire reached the cut, the men had removed enough fuel, stopping the southerly march in its tracks.
