Joseph Napiezinski, who served as the lighthouse keeper on Manitowoc Wisconsin from 1911 to 1941, recalled many winters when he had to crawl out to the lighthouse on his hands and knees over the ice-covered walkway. Upon arrival at the lighthouse, he often had to use a hatchet to break away the ice on the door so he could open it. Napiezinski was originally a second assistant keeper at Twin River Point Lighthouse in 1893 when he was transferred to Chambers Island Lighthouse in Green Bay, Wisconsin. By 1900 he was back at Twin River Point Lighthouse as the head keeper. Although we are not entirely clear on the dates, we believe that in 1911 he was transferred to the Manitowoc Pierhead Lighthouse where he served until 1918 when he was assigned only to the Manitowoc Breakwater Lighthouse where he served until his retirement in 1941. He was 77 years old when this photograph was taken.
