Lighthouse keeper Robert T. Sterling and his wife, Martha, with their dog, Chang. With the exception of Maine’s Ram Island Ledge Lighthouse, Martha Sterling lived with her husband at all of the light stations where he was stationed.
While residing at Portland Head Lighthouse, Martha would often sit in her favorite chair to do her evening knitting. One evening, Chang became irritated and started growling at the chair for no apparent reason. The dog made such a commotion that Martha decided to sit elsewhere. Moments later a rogue wave jumped from the sea hitting the keeper’s house with such force that it smashed through a window thrusting bits of jagged glass over the chair. Had Mrs. Sterling been sitting there, she could have been severely injured or possibly killed. (Lighthouse Digest archives)
