Benjamin S. Hudak, wearing his Coast Guard uniform, is shown here with his son James (Jim) in 1942 by the family home in Bayfield, Wisconsin. During World War II, Ben Hudak served in the Coast Guard from 1941 to 1946 as a Boatswains Mate 1st Class. During the winter months, he was assigned to the Duluth Coast Guard Station and was back at the lighthouse during the shipping season. In 1946 he went back to being a civilian lighthouse keeper.
