Like keepers Walters and Burke, Peter G. Van Schaick (born June 16, 1831) fought in the Battle of Gettysburg in the Civil War. He was wounded making the use of his right arm helpless. In 1867 President Andrew Johnson appointed him the keeper of the Four Mile Point Lighthouse as a reward for his military service. However, in 1869 things changed when Ulysses S. Grant became president. The Brooklyn New York Daily Eagle newspaper reported that newly elected President Ulysses S. Grant was firing Andrew Johnson appointees as fast as he could, especially those with disabilities, and Peter G. Van Schaick lost his job as the keeper. He was replaced by Walter Moses.
