Captain Charles Richardson wrote on the back of this rare, extremely early photo, “The old U.S. lighthouse tender Manzanita as she looked in the summer of 1888. The picture was taken while passing Fort Stevens wharf and bound for Puget Sound.” This was two years before the incident on Destruction Island.
