In 1987 when 36 year old Boatswains Mate 1st Class Joe B. Lanard, the 59th lighthouse keeper to serve at Boston Lighthouse, lived at Boston Lighthouse, it was a stag station; wives and families were not allowed. He lived at the lighthouse with three other Coast Guardsman, who were considered assistant keepers. The men worked on a two weeks on, one week off schedule so that three of them were always on duty. Lanard recalled that nights on the island can be eerie. In 1987 he told reporter Ron Arias that on one howling night shortly after he arrived in April of 1987 he was in the keeper’s house with the others watching TV. His back was to a window and out of the corner of his eye he glimpsed some white flashes. “At first I thought they were ghosts. Turns out they were gulls swooping down.
