This close up view shows the decaying iron work of the Mobile Point Rear Range Lighthouse. It has been stated by officials that the steel added to support the lighthouse during its 1989 restoration caused further deterioration of the lighthouse. It appears that electrolysis may have been the enemy of the lighthouse this time; the combination of different metals that lead to major rust problems with the supporting legs, which reportedly created a safety issue at Fort Morgan. However, it must be questioned why the lighthouse could not have been restored and rehabilitated at the site while it was still standing, which would not have incurred the cost of disassembling the structure, moving it and the future cost of reassembling it. Additionally, the longer the lighthouse lays in storage, the more it will cost to restore it. (Lighthouse Digest photo.)
