The 1856 Cape Disappointment Lighthouse as it appeared during the time that Joel W. Munson was the lighthouse keeper. It’s easy to understand from this photograph why excursions to the lighthouse were so popular, especially when people could view the big gun and the lighthouse at the same time.
If you look closely you will see the 1st Order Fresnel lens in the tower. This lens was removed from the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse in 1898 and installed at the newly completed North Head Lighthouse and a 4th order Fresnel lens was installed in Cape Disappointment Lighthouse, which is still in the lantern today.
The lighthouse appears quite different today than when Joel W. Munson was the lighthouse keeper. In 1930 a wide black band was painted around the middle of the light tower.
