The kitchen at the Ashtabula Lighthouse looks pretty sparse in this 1957 photo with Coast Guard lighthouse keeper Earl Heck sitting at the table. There was not much done to make the place homey. In fact the interior shows signs of water damage and falling plaster. While listening to the radio he might have heard about the FBI arresting union leader Jimmy Hoffa, the announcement that the Brooklyn Dodgers were moving to California, President Dwight Eisenhower suffering a stroke, and the Gaither Report calling for the building of more fallout shelters. But, unless there was a television at the lighthouse, he would have missed Elvis Presley’s third and final appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show.
