Notes:
Brunette Island (8 square miles) once had about 300 residents, mainly fishing families centered around Mercer's Cove, but they were resettled in nearby communities on the Newfoundland "mainland" in the 1950s. Today, the island has no human population and is a wildlife reserve.
From Jane Craig: "My great grandfather was the lighthouse keeper, there for many years. His last name was Galton and he and his wife raised 15 children in that house, the second youngest was my grandmother Elsie, born Sept 9, 1895. The Wambolt family that took over from them. My grandmother told me a little about Island life and how my great grandfather would climb the stairs every night to light the seal oil lantern."
