The Ilhas Selvagens (Savage Islands), consisting of two groups of rocky islands, are located about halfway between Madeira Island and the Canary Islands; they form a protected bird sanctuary. The lighthouse on Selvagem Grande, formerly tended by two lightkeepers, is now automated. Tower Height: 33 Height of Focal Plane: 535 Characteristic and Range: White flash every 4 seconds, visible for 13 miles. Description of Tower: Tower with red and white bands.
