Ownership and control of the Cove Point Lighthouse, Calvert County, Maryland has been transferred from the U.S. Coast Guard by Vice Admiral John Shkor to the Calvert County Government.

A recent ceremony was held on the grounds of the lighthouse to commemorate the event for the lighthouse that dates back to 1828 and is the oldest operating light in Maryland.

The U.S. Coast Guard will retain the rights to the lantern room and the 4th order lens for 20 years

The transfer was completed only after extensive work was done on the rip rap protecting the light from the waters of the Chesapeake Bay that are only 10 to 15 feet away at high tide. Senator Paul Sarbanes was instrumental in getting federal funds to keep the transfer of the light on progress.
