The Town of Scituate, Massachusetts is thinking about spending $2 million from their Community Preservation Act for the restoration of the lantern of the 1811 tower.
Scituate Lighthouse was discontinued in 1850 when the nearby first Minot’s Ledge Light went into service. Scituate Light went back into service from 1852-1860. In 1994, the lighthouse was relighted by the Scituate Historical Society as a private aid to navigation.
Town officials state that the copper sheathing on the lighthouse dome is deteriorating and there is substantial water damage. The money would be tentatively used to completely reconstruct the lantern’s exterior and interior. The town said they would also apply for grants to help fund the project.
