Long Island, New York’s Montauk Point Lighthouse celebrated its 225th Anniversary with a special Postal Service stamp cancellation that was used in conjunction with the release of the new postage stamp that honors the 1796 lighthouse.
As well as Montauk Point Lighthouse, the set of five new Mid-Atlantic lighthouse postage stamps are: Maryland’s Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, Pennsylvania’s Erie Harbor Pierhead Lighthouse, New Jersey’s Twin Lights of Navesink, and Delaware’s Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse.
Montauk Point Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in New York State, and the fourth oldest active lighthouse in the United States. The Montauk Historical Society operates a first-class museum at the site that is packed with a great collection of maritime and lighthouse items.
The postage stamps, which are sold as a pane of 20 stamps with four rows of the five lighthouses, were officially released on Saturday, August 7, which is National Lighthouse Day.
