Because very few people have ever been up close to Michigan’s White Shoal Lighthouse, and even fewer have ever been inside of it, we are posting these photos. All of the photos, unless otherwise noted, were taken in 2019 by Lighthouse Digest subscriber Hilari Seery.

Located west of the Straits of Mackinac in Lake Michigan, the White Shoal Lighthouse was built in 1910 and its lantern once held a 2nd order Fresnel lens, which is now on display at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point Lighthouse near Paradise, Michigan.

In 1976, the White Shoal Lighthouse was automated and its keepers were removed. In 2018, the White Shoal Light Historical Preservation Society began the daunting task of restoring the lighthouse. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, restoration work was cancelled for the 2020 season, but is expected to resume in the very near future.

Perhaps the next time we publish photos of the interior of the lighthouse it will be restored, something that, for obvious reasons, is a difficult and time-consuming project, especially at an off-shore structure such as the White Shoal Lighthouse.
