The Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, Maine has announced an ambitious $980,000 project that will display the 1,800 pound 2nd order lens that was once in the east tower of Maine’s Cape Elizabeth Lighthouse Station.
The exhibit will combine a high-tech media projection system with a full scale replication of the lantern to give visitors an experience of what the lens was like in a working lighthouse.
They have stated that the goal is to stimulate a 24-hour, or year round, view of the incredible beauty and significance of that part of Portland Harbor and Casco Bay. The museum stated that the exhibit would be similar to the Kodak Colorama displays at the Grand Central Terminal in New York from 1950-1990.
So far the museum has raised $375,000 toward the $980,000 project.
