Officials have now stated that continued erosion could place the historic 136-foot tall Hunting Island Lighthouse on Hunting Island in South Carolina in danger. Erosion has been an ongoing problem in the area. In 2006 the State of South Carolina spent $6 million to pump sand onto the beaches and install six groins to help block the sand from being washed away. At that time the plans called for the installation of three more groins, but the money ran out.

The Friends of Hunting Island State Park said that if something is not done soon to solve the problem, the lighthouse may have to be moved in 10 years, but, depending on weather and storms, that could change to as soon as five years.

Interestingly, the tower was originally designed with the possibility of having to be moved, which did happen over 100 years ago when the tower and keeper’s quarters were moved in 1899. To learn more about Hunting Island Lighthouse, you can refer to the story “Hunting Island Light Station Celebrates 150th” that appeared in the October, 2009 edition of Lighthouse Digest. The story can also be found in the on-line archives at www.LighthouseDigest.com.

This story appeared in the Nov/Dec 2014 edition of Lighthouse Digest Magazine. The print edition contains more stories than our internet edition, and each story generally contains more photographs - often many more - in the print edition.
