Timothy Harrison, editor of Lighthouse Digest, with a framed copy of the United States Senate Resolution 507 that was introduced in the U.S. Senate by Maine’s Senator Angus King and passed by unanimous vote in the Senate (something that is hard to do in this day and age) that Declared August 7, 2014 as National Lighthouse and Lighthouse Preservation Day.

Much of the text of the Senate Resolution was taken from Harrison’s column “Wickie’s Wisdom” that appeared May/June 2014 edition of Lighthouse Digest. You can read the full text of the editorial by going to http://foghornpublishing.com/news/wickies.htm

You can read the full text of the Senate Resolution by going to https://beta.congress.gov/bill/113th-congress/senate-resolution/507/text. Although the Senate Resolution is for 2014 only, it does honor the 225th Anniversary of the Lighthouse Act of August 7, 1789 that was passed by the First Congress of the United States. Although it has never been official, except in 1989, lighthouse organizations around the country have always considered August 7 as National Lighthouse Day and most of them hold celebrations on that date at their respective lighthouses and museums.

Harrison also worked diligently with Rep. Mike Michaud of Maine in an unsuccessful effort to convince the White House to act on the Congressional request that was started by Rep. Michaud and signed by 56 Members of Congress for a Presidential Decree that would declare August 7 in perpetuity as National Lighthouse Day.
