Once in a while, even a lighthouse as iconic and majestic as Cape Hatteras Lighthouse needs to be freshened up with some paint, as was done this past April and May.
In 1999 in an engineering marvel, the spiral-striped 193-foot tall lighthouse was moved 2900 feet back from the eroding shoreline. Its new sprucing-up included scraping down to bare bricks to make sure the new paint coating stays sharp looking for as long as possible.
Located on North Carolina’s Outer Banks near Buxton in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the lighthouse is available “in-season” for climbing.
