This photo was taken by Stewart Edward when he and Harold D. McLean, civilian employees of the Aids to Navigation shop out of the Sault Coast Guard Station in Sault Ste. Marie, were sent out to the remote Crisp Point Lighthouse on Lake Superior near Paradise, Michigan. We may never know exactly what their assignment was at that time, nor may we ever know the exact date of this photo, but in 1965, the U.S. Coast Guard demolished the historic buildings at the site. In 1996 the entryway building shown in this photograph collapsed from erosion and the lighthouse was nearly lost. It was saved at the last minute thanks to the efforts of the Crisp Point Historical Society under the leadership of Don and Nellie Ross.
Both Stuart Edward and Harold McLean were originally employed by the U. S. Lighthouse Service. When they retired in 1973, they were the last former U.S. Lighthouse Service civilian employees in the employment of the U.S. Coast Guard on the Great Lakes
