Lightships are shown in this 1939 photo at the Chelsea Lighthouse Depot in Massachusetts. The photo was labeled as the Lightship LV 81 on the left and the Lightship LV 102 on the right; however, the vessel on the right appears that it may be the Lightship LV 101. Regardless, good close up photos of lightships at lighthouse depots are hard to find. During this time, the LV 81 was in port undergoing extensive repairs. To put the time era into perspective, it was in 1939 that baseball great Lou Gehrig gave his last public speech, following a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In it, he said, “Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” Also 1939 was the beginning of World War II when Germany invaded Poland and few days later, on Sept 3rd, France and the British Commonwealth declared war on Germany. Also, it was the last year of the U.S. Lighthouse Service when it was taken over by the U.S. Coast Guard.
